what's Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that works through the sense of smell and skin absorption using various essential oils. Essential oils are compounds extracted from plants through distillation or other mechanical methods and diluted in carrier oils. The best part of this treatment is that these essential oils are not meant to be swallowed and this makes them very safe to use with minimal side effects. Aromatherapy is a complementary therapy which supports conventional treatment of various conditions. It can be applied as body oils, creams or lotions for massage and topical applications. Other methods through which aromatherapy can be utilized include as bathing salts, diffusers, room sprays, skin and hair products, facial steamers, hot and cold compresses, aromatic spritzers and clay masks.

These essential oils can be applied directly to the skin or with heat to enhance its absorption. When they are inhaled, the scent molecules of the oils travel through the olfactory nerves to the limbic system, the part of the brain responsible for emotion, behavior, motivation, olfaction and long term memory. This explains why certain smells trigger different memories. There are so many types of essential oils with different uses. The most important ones include lavender, peppermint, bergamot, sandalwood, chamomile, rose, tea tree, jasmine, and lemon.

Researches have shown that using essential oils either by inhaling them or by applying them to the skin can greatly relieve stress, anxiety and agitation and help a person lead a fulfilled life. Studies have also revealed that applying a mixture of lavender oil and peppermint to the foreheads also soothes headaches and migraines. Also tea tree oil is used for acne, insect bites and athlete’s foot while lemon oil is beneficial as a mood booster. Aromatherapy is also known to have varying degrees of antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral and antifungal properties. Essential oils are known to have many other applications. They  manage pain caused by kidney stones and osteoarthritis, improve sleep quality, boost immunity, soothe sore joints, ease discomfort of labor, alleviate low appetite and dry mouth, mitigate depression, ease the side effects of chemotherapy such as nausea and improve hospice and palliative care.
